Decisive Leadership
The office’s effectiveness will hinge on clear objectives and strong leadership, with its direction likely shaped significantly by whom the IRS chooses to lead it, according to Kimberly Tyson, who was at the Office of Chief Counsel when the agency began cracking down on easements.
That person should be a decisive and confident leader who can carry out the office’s mission, said Tyson, who now has her own practice, K. Tyson Law PLLC.
If the IRS appoints someone who is known as a doer and decision-maker – and that person is conferred with leadership – “it should be great,” she said.
Tailored Settlements
Under the new office, settlements should also account for businesses and individuals who want to resolve their cases but were not given the opportunity, including minority partners who had been seeking resolution but had been outvoted by other owners and partners, according to Tyson.
“An inadvertent consequence of 10 years of this is that there are minority partners who are sick over this,” Tyson said.
